Downey will star as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday (May 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 2027), directed by the Russo brothers.
After launching the MCU with 2008’s Iron Man, Downey became one of the world’s biggest movie stars, retiring as Tony Stark with 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Downey was revealed on stage by men in Doctor Doom masks, creating an electrifying moment for the 6,500-plus audience members.
The Russo brothers, known for their work on previous Avengers films, will direct and produce these new movies, bringing their vision to the iconic franchise.
Avengers: Doomsday replaces the previously announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, following Marvel’s split with actor Jonathan Majors.
Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, who co-wrote previous Russo Marvel films, will pen the scripts for the new Avengers movies.
Fresh off his first Oscar win for Oppenheimer and an Emmy nomination for The Sympathizer, Downey’s return to Marvel adds to his stellar year.
